State of Independence in America 2025

February 4

MBO Partners has released its 15th-anniversary State of Independence in America 2025 report, charting the evolution of the independent workforce in the U.S. This year’s findings highlight Gen Z’s sustained interest in independent work and the sector’s overall resilience amid economic uncertainty and the rise of AI.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • AI: Threat or Ally? It’s an ally. Independents report that Generative AI saves them an average of 9 hours per week.
  • Thriving. The number of independent professionals earning over $100k annually grew by 19% year-over-year—and has nearly doubled since 2020.
  • A World Without Borders. A full 32% of U.S. freelancers now serve clients outside their home country.
  • The Creator Economy is Surging. After a period of stagnation, the number of independent creators jumped 13% to 10.1 million. One notable trend is the rise of "Granfluencers"—content creators from older generations.
