DECLINE OF ENTREPRENEURS IN AMERICA

Contrary to prophecies announcing the rise of freelancing, entrepreneurship in America (freelance economy stronghold) is in a long-term demise, and Millennials are the generation least likely to become entrepreneurs in a century:

“In 1981, 2 in 10 Americans worked for themselves in some capacity. The figure was half that before the 2008 financial crisis, and it’s continued to trend down since,“ explains Bloomberg in their data-based article It’s time to reclaim the meaning of the word ‘entrepreneur’.

“Entrepreneurship education should focus on a wider range of paths for starting a business, including small and midsize companies, multigenerational ownership, and even lifestyle businesses (those set up to support a founder’s living expenses and pursuits, without growing exponentially),” the author suggests.

Note also the charming explanation of the word itself: “290 years ago, when the French-Irish economist Richard Cantillon first defined an entrepreneur as anyone who worked for unfixed wages, he noted that the one thing that linked all entrepreneurs—from wealthy merchants to beggars—was the risk they shouldered as the price of independence.”

TIME IS NOT MONEY

Stop measuring your worth by the amount of time you work, argues Sarah Duran in her article for Freelancers Union blog, reminding readers that prosperity is a mindset, not a dollar amount: “My ‘non-work’ time is just as valuable as the time I spend working and, every time I write a proposal or take on a new client, I’m quantifying how much that time is worth.”

AGAINST RECYCLING

Renowned designer Tobias van Schneider warns creatives against The publishing curse — recycling of written content. He also quotes Pablo Picasso: “Success is dangerous. One begins to copy oneself, and to copy oneself is more dangerous than to copy others. It leads to sterility.”

HOW TO DO CLIENT ONBOARDING

The article How to do client onboarding right on Freelancers Union blog covers some practical basics: 1. Finalize the documentation, 2. Send a welcome packet, 3. Onboarding questionnaire, 4. Schedule a kickoff meeting, and 5. Create a strategic project plan.

REMOTE WORKERS FLOCK TO CANARY ISLANDS

Remote workers (many of them freelance) flock to Spain’s Canary Islands, and “It’s a dream come true”, El País reports.

The trend started early in 2020, with Gran Canaria currently leading the pack: “Up until last year, between 5% and 10% of renters were remote workers. Since October, that number is 90%,” says one property manager based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

.EU DOMAIN REGISTRY LOCK

If you own any valuable .EU domains, you should protect them against hijacking, unintended changes, deletions or transfers via EURid’s Registry Lock Service. Not to confuse for less safe Registrar Lock, it provides the highest level of security for most valuable and highly visible domain names, and can only be lifted with the assistance of human operators and multi-factor verification.

You can search the list of accredited registrars to find those who support Registry Lock in your country and language. For example, we have registry-locked our primary domains Freelancing.eu and Freelance.eu with Czechia.com, an outstanding professional registrar.
